For the Heroes Out There
“What Opportunities Did We Allow To Flow By
Feeling Like The Timing Wasn't Quite Right?
What Kind Of Magic Might Have Worked If We Had Stayed Calm,
Couldn't I Have Given You A Better Life?
If I Never Did It, I Was Only Waiting
For A Better Moment That Didn't Come.
There Never Could Be A Better Moment
Than This One, This One.”
--Sir Paul McCartney from “This One” from Flowers In The Dirt, 1990.
The True test of humanity is to reach out to help those who need aid.
Hence, every year a group of teachers and I try to aid the community by urging our fellow faculty members and the students to raise money to help the United Way.
One year the assistant principal and I kissed a pig, the following year we shaved our heads. Three years later, the Spanish teacher and I dressed as cheerleaders and danced with the ladies and performed a cheer. This year, the same Spanish teacher, a new teacher, and I decided to dress as Superheroes and run an obstacle course. All in good fun.
We had to run through “fire” (cardboard), ride on scooters, make three baskets, eat pies to find a ring, run through a web, and rescue a damsel in distress (cheerleader wrapped in duct tape in a chair). All in all, some oddly wild and creative fun—and best of all it did not include farm animals, my losing my already thinning hair follicles, and dressing drag.
So from Batman, a special thanks to Elston Superman (who won—Kryptonian power) Danny Spider-Man, and to the real heroes—the local United Way.
And we all know that Batman let them win…

That's fabulous. And for a good cause, too. But I know you-- and you'd dress up like Batman anyway! In fact, you probably do in your spare time... perhaps even in your classroom, once all the kids have gone home for the day.
Seriously, though-- it's great that you're so active in helping a great cause.
All hail, Batman.
(And kudos to Senor SuperFlowers, too!)
Good Job, Eric:
I like the way that you included Senor and DanMan in your activities for United Way. I imagine that you were the hit of the night.
Lou
Julie and Lou,
Uh, do I need an excuse to dress as the Dark Knight??? No. The kids taped it and I have a copy on DVD.
Actually thanks all for the kind comments, but the hit of the night was The United Way and the Basketball team--a team that was not supposed to win more than five games had, at that point an 18 and 4 record--it went to 19 wins by the way--Congrats to the basketball team. We had fun for a fun cause--Danny is hinting about something with beards and hairs or dancing with the teaching stars for next year. I love the kid's attitude.
And my Mom said I was the cutest--only a Mom knows.
I am so proud of you, Senor, and Dan, along with the PTHS Staff and Students. A huge thank you to all who participated and supported United Way of Pontiac! Of course, thanks to their Leader....Mr. Eric Sweetwood who truly understands what it is that United Way accomplishes each year for others.
I for one can not wait for next years performance! Dee Ingles, Coordinator, United Way of Pontiac
I like Danny's "Dancing with the Teaching Stars" idea--I can do a mean bit of Swing myself. Elston knows all the new moves, and Danny, Danny's the "clubber" of the group--plucky kid that he is.
We want more of the teachers and the kids involved, and we are thinking about taking collections at the door for the event--we do not know how to pull it off, but Danny and I will meet and scope it out, as I think we can have some fun and involve the community.
And lest I forget, a very big thanks to all Dee does from every member of the board. We could not function or even come close to having the success we have had these last few years without the tireless efforts of Dee Ingels. She is our true blessing and our true hero.
